Calculating and comparing energy costs can be complex. You should consider the daily standing charges. Say, the daily standing charge is 42 pence per day then that adds up to £153 per year before you start using any energy.

Additionally, UK energy suppliers have few if any new energy tariffs that are competitive hence why our results at times may show no deals at all. Simply put, with the price of wholesale gas so high, it isn't feasible for energy providers to offer new customers a competitive energy deal.

For the time being we suggest that UK consumers remain with their current supplier on their standard variable tariff which should be a cheaper tariff.

Time to switch energy provider?

If you have been a loyal customer of your current energy provider for a considerable period and suspect that you are being overcharged, it may be a good idea to consider switching to a new gas and electric company.

The Energy Price Cap will reduce by 7% on 1 October 2023. For an average household paying their energy provider by direct debit this sees annual bills reduce from £2,074 to £1,923 - a reduction of £151 or £12.58 per month.

Of course, not every household consumes the same amount of gas and electricity so your energy bills could be in excess of £2,000 or lower than £1,900 per year.

Our household, for instance, spends £213 per month by direct debit for EON Next and we believe we are overpaying by about £10 per month. We are expecting our gas and electricity monthly direct debit to be about £189 from October - we'll see.

LoDeals will be launching LoDeals Energy soon, our own energy comparison tool. I tested it recently and I was very pleased to see that our household is on a really good tariff with EON Next and there is no real benefit in switching energy provider at the moment.

Wholesale energy prices have been falling and from 1st October 2023 Ofgem has set the prices that home energy suppliers can charge at:

Gas Daily Standing Charge - 29.62 pence per day (£8.88 per 30 day month)

Gas Unit Rate - 6.89p per kWh (typical household using 1,400 kWh per month will cost £96 per month)

Electricity Daily Standing Charge - 53.37 pence per day (£16.01 per 30 day month)

Electricity Unit Rate - 27.35p per kWh (typical household using 360kWh per month will cost £98 per month)

At LoDeals, we expect the energy companies to start introducing competitive gas and electricity tariffs again in the coming months which may be below the Ofgem price cap rates, who knows.
